Dr Alan Shotter has been appointed director of TRIUMF, effective September 1. Shotter comes to Canada's national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics from Edinbourgh Univ where he was head of the physics and astronomy departments and helped with the development of a European strategy for radioactive beams. His principal interest is nuclear astrophysics and his vision for the TRIUMF facility is to extend its capabilities beyond radioactive ion beams to include medical-biological applications. Shotter also has experience in raising public awareness of nuclear science and its impact on the natural world and man made activities.
