Dorothy Lamont, a leader in cancer charity and an advocate of increased research spending, has lost her own battle with cancer. Lamont enjoyed a long and prestigious career in the non-profit sector, culminating in her appointments as chief executive officer of the National Cancer Institute of Canada and the Canadian Cancer Society. It was in this capacity that she took on the additional challenge of lobbying for the creation of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). She also served as vice chair of the interim governing council. By the time CIHR was created in July 2000, however, Lamont had left her positions with the two cancer charities to devote her energies to her battle with cancer which had spread to her bones.
