Alan Rock has been appointed president and vice-chancellor of the Univ of Ottawa, replacing Gilles Patry who held the positions since 2001 and oversaw the university's rapid rise as a research powerhouse. Rock was Canada's ambassador to the United Nations from 2004 to 2006 and previously held a number of Cabinet positions in the Chrétien government over a period of 10 years. As Industry minister, Rock led the charge to establish an innovation agenda, which laid the groundwork for the current government's S&T Strategy.
