Dr Alan Bernstein, president of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, has been appointed to the scientific board of the Grand Challenges in Global Health Initiative (GCGHI). The GCGHI is supported by a $200-million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and administered by the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health. The scientific board is comprised of scientists and public health experts from 13 countries. Grants awarded by the GCGHI target research projects in the areas of improving childhood vaccines, creating new vaccines, controlling insects that transmit agents of disease, improving nutrition to promote health, improving drug treatment of infectious diseases, curing latent and chronic infections and measuring disease and health status in developing nations….
