The John C Polanyi Award has been made to the research team of Dr Paul Corkum and Dr André Bandrauk for their work in advancing the field of attosecond science. Corkum, a researcher with the National Research Council and the Univ of Ottawa, and Bandrauk, a researcher at the Univ of Sherbrooke, have collaborated since the 1980s. Corkum's groundbreaking work in experimental physics and precision lasers has been combined with Bandrauk's expertise in theoretical chemistry to measure the movement of molecules and their electronics over time frames of one billionth of a second. The ultimate goal of controlling the movements of electrons could lead to breakthrough applications in quantum computing and diagnostic medicine. The Polanyi Award is handed out by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and comes with a $250,000 research grant….
