The UK has created a Government Office for Science to be headed by chief scientific advisor Dr David King and located within the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS). The new office gives greater prominence to science than the previous Transdepartmental Science and Technology Group of the Office of Science and Innovation, which was situated in the former Department of Trade and Industry. Unlike Canada, the UK science advisor provides direct advice to the prime minister and Cabinet and leads the science and engineering profession within the civil service.
