Policies would prevent future science muzzling

The new Liberal government has taken steps to unmuzzle scientists, but two groups want it to go further by including scientific integrity provisions in collective bargaining agreements and formal policies at science-based departments. In a March 9 open letter to government, the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada and Evidence for Democracy say formal policies and infrastructure for science integrity will prevent future governments from muzzling scientists. Recommendations include: the right of scientists to speak publicly about their research; the timely public release of scientific information; the right of last review for scientists before documents are released; safeguards against scientific misconduct; and protection from undue commercial influence….
