A Statistics Canada study shows that Ottawa was second only to San Jose CA in the percentage of its workforce employed in science and engineering (S&E) work just as the technology boom began to collapse. The study covered the period between 1980 and 2001and examined 316 Canadian and US cities with populations greater than 100,000. It found that San Jose ranked first with 15.7% of its work force in S&E positions, followed by Ottawa-Gatineau with 11.6%. Other Canadian cities that placed prominently on the 2001 list and their corresponding rankings are: Calgary (7.6%/17th), Toronto (6.7%/25th); Quebec City (6.2%/32nd); and, Montreal (5.5%/53rd). Canada outranked the US as a whole when examining larger cities. FMI: www.statcan.ca/bsolc/english/bsolc?catno=11-622-MIE2006011....
