NRC simulator technology installed at The Neuro

Another in a series of seven virtual reality neurosurgery training centres has opened in Montreal utilizing technology developed by the National Research Council. The Neurological Simulation Centre at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (The Neuro) will allow surgeons to employ high-definition haptic hardware to move and touch parts of a simulation of a patient's brain, in effect allowing surgeons to refine surgical techniques. The technology emerged from the NRC's Patient-Specific Virtual Reality Systems for Surgical Oncology program, which plans to extend the technology's focus to include other critical tumour resections such as colorectal, prostate and breast cancers. An NRC simulator has already been installed at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre in Halifax and installations are also planned for Ottawa, Toronto, London, Winnipeg and Calgary.
