Dr David Phipps has been appointed director of partnerships for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) with a mandate to enhance collaboration with industry, governments, community groups, agencies and the voluntary health sector. Phipps comes to CIHR from the Canadian Arthritis Network where he served for one year as executive director of business development. Prior to that appointment, he was manager of life sciences and medical products with the Univ of Toronto’s Innovations Foundation where he managed the intellectual property portfolio. Phipps arrival at CIHR fills the remaining gap left by the departure of Marc Lepage who moved to Genome Canada when the CIHR succeeded the Medical Research Council (MRC). Lepage had served as director of business development, and the industry side of his duties were assumed by David Brenner, CIHR’s director of industry programs (CIHR/Rx&D Research Program). Phipps received his PhD in immunology from Queen’s Univ, completed fellowships with the National Health Research Development Program and the MS Society of Canada, and pursued post-doctoral work at the University Health Network and Canadian Blood Services….
