Canadian inventors add value to US patents: study

A big data research analysis project of US patents at the Univ of Kansas has found that patents with at least one Canadian inventor are 15% more valuable than other patents. The study also found that when an inventor from a country other than Canada was included, the average value actually fell.The Canadian component of the research, conducted by Dr Andrew Torrance, was commissioned by the department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development. It's not clear why Canadian inventors add value to US patents with speculation ranging from the characteristics of S&T education in Canada to Canadians' skill at collaborating with other talented inventors. The project also plans to analyze patent data that includes inventors from all other countries for comparative purposes....
