Wi-LAN accelerates R&D with TPC assistance

Calgary-based Wi-LAN Inc is embarking on a $29-million R&D project to accelerate development of its wireless non-line-of-sight transmission technology, with $8.8 million in assistance from Technology Partnerships Canada (TPC). The one-time telecom stock darling specializes in providing broadband wireless communications products and technologies for businesses and telecom service providers. Its wideband-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technology is recognized as the standard in the US and Europe. Improving the technology will make Wi-LAN products more attractive for the provision of so-called “last mile” services in the areas of telemedicine and distance education.
