Ontario Science and Innovation Council membership announced

Membership of the arm's length Ontario Science and Innovation Council (OSIC) has been announced, six months to the day after premier Mike Harris unveiled its creation (R$, December 8/99). The new Council is composed of 18 science and technology leaders from the academic, government and private sectors and is led by Dr Suzanne Fortier, VP academic at Queen's Univ and its former VP research.

Several members of the OSIC are not residents of Ontario but all have a link to the province. The Council's inaugural meeting is expected in September. The Council members and their main affiliation are:

Dr Suzanne Fortier (chair), VP academic, Queen's Univ;

Dr Douglas Barber (vice-chair), former president/CEO, Gennum Corp;

Dr Geoffrey Ballard, founder, Ballard Power Systems;

Dr Alan Bernstein, president, Canadian Institutes of Health Research;

Dr Michel Chrétien, CEO/scientific director, Loeb Health Research Institute;

David Crane, economics editor, The Toronto Star;

Dr Aled Edwards, associate professor medical biophysics/medical genetics, Univ of Toronto;

Dr Michael Gibbons, secretary general, Ass'n of Commonwealth Universities;

Dr Russell Joffe, dean and VP faculty of health sciences, McMaster Univ;

Kenneth Knox, former DM, Ministry of Energy, Science and Technology;

Darryl Lake, CEO, Northern Centre for Advanced Technology Inc;

Mike Lazaridis, president/CEO & co-founder, Research in Motion Ltd;

Paul Lucas, president/CEO, Glaxo Wellcome Canada;

Dr Kenneth Melvin, cardiologist, University Health Network (Toronto General and Western Hospitals);

Jo-Anne Raynes, former VP knowledge-based business, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce;

Carol Stephenson, president/CEO, Lucent Technologies Canada;
