Hamilton’s post-secondary institutions have banded together to launch CityLAB Hamilton, a pilot innovation hub where students can collaborate, design, launch and test products to address local issues such as climate change, municipal excellence and healthy neighbourhoods. McMaster Univ, Mohawk College and Redeemer College are collaborating on the new innovation hub which is aimed at giving students new skills and connections for employment after graduation, building bridges across disciplines and exposing city staff to new ideas in support of strategic priorities. The pilot will run until December 2019 under the direction of Patrick Byrne who is on leave from his PhD studies in English and cultural studies at McMaster. Byrne has experience at both Sheridan College and McMaster’s Discovery Program as an experimental and interdisciplinary educator and has worked with adults experiencing barriers to higher education.
