Expect to hear more from federal policy makers as the Liberal government moves forward with crafting its science, technology and innovation (STI) policies. Mandate letters delivered to the new Cabinet ministers make it clear that openness and inclusiveness are to be hallmarks of the new administration.

The letters say the government's work will be "informed by performance measurement, evidence, and feedback from Canadians" and that the success of its platform "depends on our ability to thoughtfully consider the professional, non-partisan advice of public servants".

Time will tell whether these lofty sentiments are adhered to in a meaningful way. The previous government took the reins of power pledging transparency and accountability and went on to run the most secretive administration in Canadian history.

Those who have visited Ottawa's policy shops in recent days report widespread optimism that expertise and advice will once again be part of the decision-making apparatus. The Liberal government's repeated mantra of employing evidence-based decision making has struck a chord.

Directives on the federal research front have been even more enthusiastically received. With the muzzles off, government scientists are once again free to speak at public events and with the media, without having to ask for permission or have their answers molded by committee at the Prime Minister's Office. And they will presumably be able to once again participate in conferences and meetings. It's a promising start to a renewed relationship with Canada's STI community.
