Dr Philip Hicks has been appointed president of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro NS for a five-year term. Hicks joins the college after completing a four-year term as S&T counsellor in Tokyo for the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT). He was seconded to DFAIT from the National Research Council where he was a senior research officer and group leader at the Institute for Biological Sciences. While in Tokyo, Hicks twice held the presidency of the S&T Diplomat’s Circle which he helped to grow to 65 member countries. Hicks has a PhD in physiology from the Univ of British Columbia and did post-doctoral work at Gigu Univ in Japan and the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Goettingen, Germany....

The winners of the 2003 Killam Prizes winners have been announced by the Canada Council and will be formally presented May 21 in Edmonton. This year’s winners are: Edward Davidson, professor of computer and electrical engineering at the Univ of Toronto. Davidson is widely recognized for his work with computational algorithms as they relate to automatic control and automation for large-scale industrial systems. Erwin Diewert, professor of economics at the Univ of British Columbia, is being honoured for his research of productivity measurement and dynamics, leading to greater understanding of cross-country and temporal trends in productivity growth. Francoise Duchesneau, professor of philosophy at the Univ of Montreal, is an expert on modern philosophy and the history and philosophy of science. Tak Mak, professor of immunology at the Univ of Toronto, is a world leader in the study of virology, immunology, molecular biology and cancer genetics. His work was instrumental in creating genetically engineered mice, enhancing the understanding of the human immune system. David Schindler, professor of ecology at the Univ of Alberta, is a world authority on aquatic ecosystems, leading to a greater comprehension of problems such as acid rain, eutrophication and climate change. His studies have led to policy decisions that have saved thousands of lakes around the world....

Three new S&T counsellors have been appointed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, with one new face, a reconfirmation and a switch in duties for a third.
