Dr Paul Young

Dr Paul Young has been appointed VP research at the Univ of Toronto effective November 1. He replaces Dr John Challis who stepped down June 30 after a four-year term to return to a teaching and research position in the U of T's department of physiology. Challis was replaced in the interim by Dr Tim McTiernan, assistant VP and executive director of Innovations at the Univ of Toronto. After beginning his academic career in the UK, Young was recruited by the U of T in 2002. He is responsible for pioneering techniques used in the monitoring and interpretation of induced seismicity in the mining, petroleum and nuclear waste disposal industries. Young currently chairs the department of civil engineering and holds the Keck chair of seismology and rock mechanics. He holds a BSc in geological sciences (Univ of London), an MSc in rock mechanics (Univ of Newcastle) and a PhD in applied seismology (Univ of Sunderland)….
