Dr Arvind Gupta has been appointed the next president of the Univ of British Columbia. Currently CEO and scientific director of Mitacs, Gupta takes up his new position July 1st, replacing Dr Stephen Toope who will become the director of the Univ of Toronto's Munk School of Global Affairs on January 1/15. Since graduating from the Univ of Toronto with a PhD in 1991, he has been involved in the creation of a number of mathematics-focused organizations and institutions including the Mitacs Network of Centres of Excellence (now Mprime), Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) and the Banff International Research Station (BIRS). His leadership at Mitacs has resulted in a dramatic increase in funding for internships and fellowships as it has become the go-to organization for the federal government's skills agenda. Gupta is a member of the Science, Technology and Innovation Council and sat on the highly influential Independent Panel on Federal Support to Research and Development (aka the Jenkins Panel) whose report — Innovation Canada: A Call to Action — is significantly transforming federal support for science and technology…..
