TPC funds COM DEV and Indal R&D projects

Technology Partnerships Canada (TPC) has made modest investments in two established aerospace and defence firms to advance technology development already underway. COM DEV Ltd has received $2.5 million to accelerate development of its proprietary high frequency surface acoustic wave (SAW) filter technology that enables telecommunications firms to process signals acoustically instead of digitally. The Cambridge ON-based firm has also developed tools to design SAW filters and the funding will help it advance the necessary manufacturing and processing of the devices. SAW components are made using a photolithographic process similar to that of integrated circuits. Mississauga ON-based Indal Technologies Inc has received $2.9 million in TPC funding to develop its wireless aircraft handling system (WAHS) technology. The funding will help to move the firm’s sustaining engineering development activities to a higher level. Ship modernization and marine helicopter programs worldwide require more advanced technologies as ships have smaller flight decks and require more precise landing systems. Indal is a wholly owned subsidiary of UK-based Novar plc, which employs 1,250 people in Calgary, Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver….
