Alberta politicians and the leaders of the province’s three universities recently visited Ottawa to lobby for a fair share of federal research funding. Team Alberta members met with federal Cabinet ministers and senior bureaucrats to discuss shared research and innovation initiatives in priority areas such as energy, as well as discussing efforts to diversify the provincial economy. Alberta receives proportionally less research funding than Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia on a per capita basis and less than half which Nova Scotia receives. In FY14-15, Ontario universities received $1.25 billion in federal research funding while Alberta received just $267 million.
