SOLAS receives $9 million for climate change research

The Canadian Surface Ocean Lower Atmospheric Study (SOLAS) has received nearly $9 million to study key interactions between the atmosphere and oceans as they relate to climate change. The funding will be provided by the Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences (CFCAS) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC). The Department of Fisheries and Oceans will match the financial support with a contribution of 90 days of ship time, the expertise of scientific personnel and the use of research facilities and equipment. SOLAS researchers plan to generate qualitative knowledge of the ecological, chemical and physical processes involved in the feedback between the ocean and the atmosphere. The research team will undertake two expeditions to the Pacific Subarctic and Northwest Atlantic to gather oceanic and atmospheric samples. The SOLAS network is comprised of 43 researchers from nine universities and government institutions, as well as 30 graduate students and 15 postdoctoral scientists who will be able to further their training in a setting of international collaboration.
