Private non-profit R&D spending up 15% in 2013

Private non-profit organizations (PNPO) performed $144 million in R&D in 2013, up 15.2% from 2012. Medical sciences accounted for $122 million or 85% of the total, followed by other natural sciences and engineering ($17 million) and social sciences and humanities ($5 million). PNPOs employed 1,211 full-time equivalents in 2011, down from 1,303 in 2010 and well off their peak of 2,250 in 2006. PNPOs also funded external organizations to conduct research to the tune of $286 million in 2011. Activities in the natural sciences and engineering received $265 million or 92.7% of the total, with social sciences and humanities activities receiving ($21 million)....
