OIT invests in research infrastructure at the Univ of Western Ontario

The Ontario Innovation Trust (OIT) has invested $18 million in a variety of research infrastructure projects at the Univ of Western Ontario (UWO), including $9.6 million for the Canadian Light Source (CLS), a $173.5-million project approved for funding by the Canada Foundation for Innovation last year (R$, April 14/99). The funding is tied to research projects approved by the CFI and includes investments in biomedical engineering, biotechnology, and environmental technologies. OIT support for the CLS goes toward the construction of beamlines to carry synchrotron light to associated work stations, and gives Ontario a seat on the CLS board of directors. The funds will be managed by the Ontario Synchrotron Consortium headquartered at UWO. The CLS is being constructed on the campus of the Univ of Saskatchewan and is slated for completion by the end of 2003. Dr Mike Bancroft has been seconded from UWO to direct the CLS....
