New Canada Research Chairs awards

The Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program has announced 132 new or renewed chairs at 36 post-secondary institutions worth $118.2 million plus $6.3 million in infrastructure support from the Canada Foundation for Innovation.

The latest round of awards includes 44 new chair holders, 84 renewals and four which moved from Level II to Level I. An equal number (55) were awarded to health and natural sciences and engineering with the remainder (22) going to research in the social sciences and humanities.

Data showing the breakdown of chair allocations have not been updated to include the latest round. As of November/11, out of the 2,000 positions available under the program, 1,798 were occupied — 786 Tier 1 and 1,012 Tier 2 chairholders.

The number of chairholders recruited from outside of Canada totaled 473 (26.6%). That includes expatriates including those recruited from the US (217) and international recruits including US recruits (256).

Gender balance remains a concern with only 456 (25.4%) held by females. At the Tier I level, just 134 (17) are held by women. At the Tier II level for emerging researchers, 322 (31.8%) are occupied by women. The number of chairholders renewed for a second term is1,069.
