Janet Walden is retiring after more than 33 years with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). Throughout her career, Walden assumed increasingly senior positions with NSERC, culminating with her appointment as chief operating officer in 2013 in charge of the agency while it sought a permanent president (R$, April 24/13). Other positions held by Walden include director of the Networks of Centres of Excellence in the program's early years and more recently a 16-year tenure as VP of NSERC's increasingly influential Research Partnership Programs (RPP). Invest Ottawa has expanded its board of directors with the addition of five seasoned tech entrepreneurs including Tobias Lütke, CEO and co-founder of Shopify, which enjoyed a stellar IPO launch last week. The other new board members are: Susan Richards, virtual CFO and co-founder of on-line gift delivery firm Givopoly; Jason Flick, serial entrepreneur and co-founder and president of television interface developer YOUi Labs; David Ross, CEO of Ross Video, a developer of television hardware; and, Jim Roche, co-founder of Tundra Semiconductor Corp and president and CEO of Stratford Managers Corp.
