Federal and Yukon governments invest $1.3M in climate change adaptation research

Transport Canada and the Government of Yukon are collaborating to invest $1.3 million in two climate change adaptation research projects in the North. The investments fall under the Northern Transportation Adaptation Initiative and seek to make northern transportation more resilient to the effects of climate change. The first project will focus on stabilizing permafrost thaw on a section of the Alaskan Highway, using devices that transfer cold surface air into the permafrost. The second project will assess the impact of climate change on the cost of maintaining northern highways. It will also study how environmental factors associated with climate change lead to hazardous road conditions. The results of the second project will be used to develop training materials for managing northern transportation infrastructure.
