FedDev Ontario backs McMaster's BEAM facility

McMaster Univ's Fraunhofer Project Centre for Biomedical Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing (BEAM) has received a $12-million federal grant, matching $12 million in commitments from the Government of Ontario, City of Hamilton and McMaster. Other organizations and private sector partners have contributed $9 million, bringing the project's investment to $33 million. Slated to open in 2017, BEAM is a collaboration between McMaster and the Leipzig Germany-based Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI. It will be located in a new state-of-the-art, 2,000-sq-m facility at McMaster Innovation Park, and will develop novel technologies for eye care, point-of-care medical devices and cancer treatments. BEAM will be led by four co-directors focused on the commercialization of new products and providing small businesses with access to facilities, expertise and global value chains.
