We are pleased to bring you this first issue of a re-launched RE$EARCH MONEY, Canada's most authoritative source of information on research and technology policy, funding and investment.

The publication of RE$EARCH MONEY was suspended early this year when its parent firm declared bankruptcy. When the news became public, many in Canada's science and technology community expressed alarm that they had lost their primary vehicle for news, information exchange and informed debate. Less than four weeks later, the newsletter has re-emerged under the leadership of a dynamic team, including the same managing editor.

We believe that it is more important than ever for those on the leading edge of the S&T revolution to have access to timely, informed and independent information they can use. Everywhere you look, and in virtually every sector of the economy, profound change is occurring at an unprecedented rate. As Canada's transition to a knowledge-based economy continues to accelerate, so does our commitment to provide timely information and a flexible, responsive forum for leaders of the S&T community.

Our goal is to provide a user-friendly package that provides information and analysis on how S&T and R&D are managed in the public and private sectors. Financing, policy and programs all fall within the RE$EARCH MONEY mandate, whether they occur at the national, provincial and regional level.

To ensure the highest possible level of service to our subscribers, we've re-designed the publication to make it easier and more enjoyable to read. More significantly, we've introduced a new space (the space you're reading now) for a regular guest editorial section to provide a venue for readers' views on important issues and developments. If you would like to submit an editorial please contact Managing Editor Mark Henderson to discuss your idea. We also encourage you and your organization to keep us informed of news and developments that would be of interest to others (mhenderson@sympatico.ca). We will continue to publish both print and on-line versions, with the latter providing access to searchable back issues in the near future (www.researchmoneyinc.com).

In the past few weeks we have spoken with many readers and asked them how we can improve the newsletter. In response, we plan to boost our regional coverage. We have also modified our pricing structure, offering substantial savings to organizations that take 10 or more copies. This allows each person to have their own copy of RE$EARCH MONEY and not wait for a copy to circulate through the office. We have also added a "Personal" subscription category that offers discounts to individual subscribers who do not belong to an organization that will pay for their subscription. We will continue to implement reader suggestions and improve the newsletter in other ways.

We invite you to enjoy this first edition of the re-launched edition of RE$EARCH MONEY. We hope that former readers will renew their commitment, and we welcome new readers to become part of the growing RE$EARCH MONEY family.
