Dr Alastair Glass

Dr Alastair Glass has been appointed DM of the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation (OMRI), a recently created ministry headed by premier Dalton McGuinty (R$, July 1/05). He replaces Dr Tim McTiernan, who held the position in an acting capacity and now returns to his former role as ADM research and commercialization. Glass, who officially starts February 13, is currently chair of the Tyndall National Institute in Cork Ireland and until recently was its acting CEO. Prior to that, he was director of information and communication sciences at Science Foundation Ireland. Glass enjoyed a long career with AT&T as a research manager and VP photonics research at Bell Laboratories in the 1980s and 1990s. He was chief technical officer of the optical networking group at Lucent Technologies before retiring in 2000. In 2000, he received the 2000 IEEE Sarnoff Award for his pioneering work on electro-optical materials, photorefractive phenomena and leadership in the development of wavelength division multiplexing components. He holds BSc from London's University College and a PhD in physics from the Univ of British Columbia....
