Dr Alain Beaudet has been re-appointed president of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) for a second five-year term. During his first term, Beaudet spearheaded several new initiatives at CIHR, which has had its budget frozen in recent years as part of the government's deficit elimination measures. He helped implement the new Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research, reformed the council's open programs and review process and led the launch of several initiatives aimed at research priorities such as Alzheimer's disease, personalized medicine, community-based primary health care and Aboriginal Peoples' health.
