Collaboration essential to preserve digital information

An expert panel examining Canada's libraries, archives, galleries and museums ("memory institutions") says collaboration and coordination are key to overcoming technical challenges posed by digitization, massive volumes of information and relevance as new sources of online information emerge. The panel's report — Leading in the Digital World: Opportunities for Canada's Memory Institutions — was produced by the Council of Canadian Academies at the request of Library and Archives Canada. The report notes that Canada has slipped in its leadership role in digital archiving and won't regain it unless memory institutions quickly and creatively collaborate on ways to preserve information derived from many disparate sources and spread over numerous platforms.
