In its January 20/03 issue, RE$EARCH MONEY ran a lead story on the MaRS project in Toronto. In the breakdown of funding raised to date, the story neglected to include the contribution of the Univ of Toronto. U of T was an early and critical supporter of the project, committing $5 million in late 2000 and signing a contribution agreement in April/02. That support had a direct impact on MaRS’ ability to purchase lands from the University Health Network. In return, U of T was given representation on the MaRS board (currently, Dr Carolyn Tuohy, interim VP research and international relations), first rights to lease space as each of the project’s five towers becomes available and protections to ensure that the lands are used only for purposes consistent with MaRS’ goals....
