CANARIE launches Green IT pilot program

CANARIE Inc has launched a call for proposals for its $3-million Green IT Pilot Program to assist in the development of hardware, software and networking technologies that use reduced energy and leave a smaller carbon footprint. Potential projects fall into two categories: technical feasibility of computers and other cyber infrastructure of re-locating to zero-carbon data centres connected by optical networks and powered by renewable energy ($2 million), and business cases for providing carbon offsets to university researchers and IT personnel who reduce their carbon footprints ($1 million). The successful projects will be announced in October….
