Canadian researchers will be participating in three of six projects aimed at developing a new generation of software to exploit anticipated increases in computer processing speeds in the next 10 years. Projects funded under the inaugural competition of the G8 Research Councils Initiative on Multilateral Research Funding are worth $10 million, with $773,000 coming from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council to support Canadian participation. Dr Paul Kushner of the Univ of Toronto receives $231,000 to participate in ExArch (climate analytics on distributed exascale data archives. Also from U of T, Dr Qinya Liu will collaborate with US and French researchers on Seismic Imaging (exascale simulations of seismic wave propagation to model earthquakes and the earth's exterior). The Univ of Victoria's Dr Andrew Weaver receives $267,000 to participate in ECS, Enabling Climate Simulation at extreme scale. The G8 initiative was launched last year to explore topics of global relevance best tackled by multinational research teams….
