BC government helps fund new TRIUMF accelerator

The Province of British Columbia is investing $30.7 million in the Advanced Rare IsotopE Laboratory (ARIEL) at TRIUMF on the campus of the Univ of British Columbia. The $62.9-million project will see the construction of an underground beam tunnel that will house a linear accelerator used to produce medical isotopes that could alleviate the shortage of supply in Canada and globally (R$, March 19/10 & October 8/09). The project has already received $17.8 from the Canada Foundation for Innovation and $14.4 million from the federal government through the National Research Council.
