November 9 in Ottawa

Commercialization of Canadian research is fast becoming one of the most pressing issues facing governments today. While there is agreement on its necessity for boosting productivity and enhancing innovation, no such consensus exists for how it can best be achieved. On November 9 in Ottawa, RE$EARCH MONEY’s fourth annual conference will explore the various commercialization options facing policy makers, companies, government laboratories and educational institutions.

The need for such a discussion is even more urgent in light of new data on corporate R&D spending. As the article on page 5 reveals, private sector R&D spending declined for the second year running in FY03, increasing the challenge of moving Canada into the top echelon of R&D performing nations.

“Commercial activity happens in the private sector. We’ve invited leaders from the front lines — entrepreneurs, investors, business executives — to share their experiences,” says Dr Jeffrey Crelinsten, conference organizer and co-publisher of RE$EARCH MONEY. “We also picked policy makers and researchers who understand and interact with the private sector.”

The Conference kicks off with a keynote address by Mike Lazaridis, co-CEO of Research in Motion. The luncheon speaker is Dr Arthur Carty, National Science Advisor to the Prime Minister.
