Dr Sushanta Mitra has been appointed executive director of the Waterloo Institute of Nanotechnology (WIN), effective August 1st. He replaces Dr Arthur Carty who served as its inaugural executive director since 2008. Mitra comes to WIN from York Univ where he was associate VP research and a professor of micro & nanotechnology for social innovation. While at York he was also chair of its mechanical engineering department and co-founder of the Canada-India Research Centre of Excellence. Prior to York, he was assistant VP research at the Univ of Alberta where he led a number of Canadian and global initiatives focused on coal bioconversion through the Nano-Bio-Energy Network and Global Integrated Water Management Network. Mitra holds a PhD in mechanical engineering at the Univ of Waterloo and an MSc in mechanical engineering from the Univ of Victoria.
