Smart Communities pilot projects chosen

Industry Canada has announced its 12 Smart Communities Demonstration Projects which will see one community located in each province, as well as one in the Northwest territories and an Aboriginal project in Ontario. As announced in the federal 1999 budget under the Connecting Canadians initiative, the government will contribute $5 million to each project with matching funds provided by each jurisdiction. The communities are: Aboriginal - Sioux Lookout ON; Northwest Territories - Yellowknife; British Columbia - Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody; Alberta - Calgary; Saskatchewan - Northern Saskatchewan (including La Ronge); Manitoba - Brandon, Neepawa, Souris, Carberry, Minnedosa; Ontario - Ottawa-Carleton; Quebec - Shawinigan, Grand Mère; New Brunswick - Acadian Peninsula (various communities); Nova Scotia - Western Valley (various communities); Prince Edward Island - Charlottetown, Cornwall, Stratford; and, Newfoundland - Labrador....
