RDC funds microscope for mining research

The Research & Development Corporation of Newfoundland and Labrador (RDC) is providing nearly $1 million to facilitate the purchase of a specialized microscope and related software by Memorial Univ. The Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscope will be used by Memorial researchers to estimate and optimize iron recovered in rock during the mining process. Iron ore is the province's largest mineral export and the microscope purchase was assisted by $250,000 from the Iron Ore Company of Canada. RDC funding comes from the research, tools and equipment component of its $10-million call for R&D infrastructure proposals issued April/10….
