Dr Roman Szumski has been appointed VP life sciences at the National Research Council, as part of a consolidation of the institutes whose core focus is life sciences. He replaces acting VP David Simpson.

The announcement of Szumski’s appointment is the first major personnel change since the arrival of Dr Pierre Coulombe as NRC president in February.

By the time Szumski begins his new duties in September, the NRC will have announced a “full reorganization of the executive responsibilities of the NRC research institutes to complement the consolidation of the life sciences sector under the new Vice-President position”.

Szumski comes to NRC from Toronto-based MDS Inc where he was VP science and technology. Prior to that he was founding CEO of Calgary Laboratory Services and president of MDS-Kasper Medical Laboratories. A Montreal native, Szumski is trained as a medical doctor and pathologist. He holds degrees from Queen’s Univ and McGill Univ and is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
