For anyone who has worked in the research and innovation space for more than a few years, the announcement of a major consultation for the federal Innovation Agenda may be viewed with a combination of skepticism and dread. In 2002, a similar exercise was unleashed. The final product was underwhelming — a fractured, multi-faceted strategy that did little of what it was intended to achieve.

There were very good reasons for why that science and technology strategy failed and there's reason to hope that these mistakes can be avoided this time around. The six action areas outlined last week for the consultation phase may not be a definitive list, but the main thrust (improving productivity) is the right one.

For younger participants in the innovation space, the agenda's consultation phase is an opportunity to contribute enthusiastically in shaping a future where Canada can build an innovative and sustainable society and economy. And it is precisely that cohort whose opinions should be courted.

Technological innovation is spreading throughout every facet of society and the economy and shows no sign of slowing down. The younger generation is the one contributing the ideas and inventions that will shape how we live and work in the decades to come and their perspectives are critical to policies and programs that facilitate positive change.

Canada is at a crossroad and an infusion of new concepts, ideas and practices are essential to preserve and enhance our enviable standard of living. The government would be foolish not to listen to those who are poised to make it happen.
