Dr Meric Gertler has been appointed president of the Univ of Toronto, replacing Dr David Naylor who is stepping down after eight years. Gertler is currently dean of the university's faculty of arts and science and a professor in the department of geography which he joined in 1983. He is a world renowned expert in the geography of economic activity and the role of creativity, culture and diversity in urban life. He has been the co-director of two important research programs in the field — the Program on Globalization and Regional Innovation Systems and the Innovation Systems Research Network. Gertler holds an Hon BA from McMaster Univ, a Master's degree in city planning from the Univ of California Berkeley and a PhD from Harvard Univ....
