Dr Kirk Schultz is the inaugural research chair in blood and marrow transplantation (BMT) at the BC Research Institute. Schultz is a pediatric oncologist and BMT physician at the BC Children’s Hospital, associate professor at the Univ of British Columbia (UBC) and principal investigator at the BC Research Institute for Children’s and Women’s Health. The chair is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, the UBC and the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. Schultz’s appointment establishes the fourth chair in transplantation under an agreement between CIHR, Wyeth and recipient universities. Each chair has received $1.1 million in funding. The other chair holders and their areas of specialization are: Dr Li Zhang, Univ of Toronto (donor-specific transplant tolerance), Dr Norman Kneteman, Univ of Alberta (immunosuppression therapies and prevention models) and Dr James Shapiro, Univ of Alberta (pancreatic islet transplantation)....
