Dolby Labs buys BrightSide Technologies

Vancouver's BrightSide Technologies Inc (formerly Sunnybrook Technologies) is being acquired by Dolby Laboratories Inc, San Francisco, for US$28 million in cash. The company will remain in Vancouver as part of Dolby Canada. The Univ of British Columbia spin-off is a private, development-stage company focused on high dynamic range imaging technology that dramatically improves the contrast ratio of Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) televisions by replacing traditional fluorescent light inside the televisions with individually adjustable light emitting diodes (LEDs). The initial display technology was developed over a six-year period at UBC's Structured Surface Physics Laboratory. BrightSide's technology targets markets such as consumer televisions (including front- and rear-projection TVs), game devices, medical imaging, movie post production and satellite imaging….
