Cancer research garners $254 million in funding

Peer-reviewed cancer research received $254 million in direct support in 2005, according to a new report from the Canadian Cancer Research Alliance (CCRA). The investment is the total from 19 of Canada's major cancer research funding organizations. The Canadian Institutes of Health Research is the single largest funder, accounting for 45% of the total. The single largest voluntary organization is the Terry Fox Foundation, accounting for 24%. General cancer research accounted for 44%, of which half was in biology. The remainder was devoted to specific diseases, with breast cancer securing the single largest amount ($38 million). The second largest disease-specific area is leukemia ($18 million), with more than half devoted to lung cancer. The CCRA is currently compiling 2006 data and hopes to expand the number of participating organizations….
