Canada launches $2B, 24-year space strategy with new Canadarm for NASA-led moon base project

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada will partner in the NASA-led Lunar Gateway, a project to provide living space for astronauts on the moon, as well as docking space for visiting spacecraft and research laboratories. Canada is contributing a smart robotic system – Canadarm3 – for repair and maintenance. The project will serve as "the cornerstone of Canada’s new, ambitious space strategy," the PM's office said. Federal investment of $2.05 billion over 24 years for Canada’s space program is anticipated to create hundreds of well-paying jobs and contribute $100 million annually to Canada’s gross domestic product. The investment includes $150 million over five years for a Lunar Exploration Accelerator Program to help Canadian SMEs develop new technologies for lunar orbit, in fields that include artificial intelligence, robotics, and health.
