Aliant creates R&D unit for Internet-based applications

Aliant Inc has created a new wholly owned subsidiary within its emerging business division to handle the Atlantic Canada telecommunication firm's R&D operations. Formed last February, Innovatia Inc will work towards developing Internet-based applications for the consumer and business markets in its so-called LivingLAB environment. Products and services will then be marketed and delivered through the parent firm's operating companies. With an initial staff of 200, Innovatia was formed from the amalgamation of the Aliant companies and divisions, formerly known as New North Media, NBTel Global and the Mpowered Export division of Maritime Telegraph and Telephone. It also has minority holding in firms such as iMagic TV, eResolution and Voice Mobility International. Innovatia will collaborate with major telecom players such as Nortel Networks, US West, Newbridge Networks and British Telecom....
