AIMS-NEI receives $22.6 million in new funding

The federal government is providing $22.6 million over five years to the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences - Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS-NEI), helping to expand its model of training African post-graduate students to include climate change. The NEI network of African institutes was launched in 2010 with $20 million over four years, following a proposal of the Global Outreach Initiative of the Waterloo-based Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. Funding is provided by Global Affairs Canada ($19.6 million) and the International Development Research Centre ($3 million). The new funding will support climate change internships for students and alumni, a specialized program in climate change at AIMS Rwanda and research fellowships for African women mathematical scientists. A new AIMS centre will also be opened in Francophone Africa. AIMS has six centres, located in South Africa, Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon, Tanzania, and Rwanda.
