U of A and Helmholtz team to conduct oilsands research

The Univ of Alberta is teaming with researchers from the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres with a five-year agreement to develop technologies for oilsands production that will reduce their carbon footprint. The partnership seeks to better manage the process of capturing and storing of carbon dioxide produced during oilsands extraction, replacing natural gas with geothermal energy sources and developing recycling technology for fresh water and reclamation of lands damaged by oil and mining or used by tailings ponds. Helmholtz is a network of 16 S&T centres with a staff of 28,000 and has expertise in coal industry hydrocarbons. U of A has more than 50 R&D projects underway on campus.
