Sustainable Development Technology Canada funds Quebec lithium-ion battery recycling project for $3.8 million

The Quebec consortium Lithion Recycling Inc. has received $3.8 million from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) to implement a novel process for recycling lithium-ion batteries. The process was developed by Seneca, a Montreal-based consulting firm that specializes in industrial materials process engineering. Lithium-ion batteries are used in electric vehicles, a growing market that so far lacks a sustainable recycling solution. The process developed by Seneca and deployed by Lithion Recycling Inc. promises to allow up to 95% recovery of these batteries’ components. Apart from Seneca, other members of the consortium include Centre d'études des procédés chimiques du Québec (CEPROCQ), Call2Recycle, and Hydro-Québec's Center of Excellence in Transportation Electrification and Energy Storage (CETEES).
